How introductory APR offers work

An introductory rate lasts for a set period and may cover only certain transactions. Compare the end date, fees, and ongoing APR together.

What an introductory APR means

An introductory annual percentage rate is a temporary rate that applies under stated conditions. It may cover purchases, balance transfers, or both.

The offer terms explain when the period begins, how long it lasts, and the rate that applies afterward. Those details matter more than the headline alone.

Your introductory-rate comparison checklist

Read the pricing and terms before relying on a promotional period.

Eligible transactionsWrite down whether the promotion covers purchases, balance transfers, or both.
Start and end datesRecord when the promotional clock starts and the final date it applies.

Payment conditionsCheck each due date, the required minimum, and what could end the promotion.
Payoff timingAllow room to repay before the end date; the minimum may not clear the balance.

Build a payoff plan

For a 0% promotion, start with the balance plus any fees added to it, divided by the billing cycles remaining. Leave time to finish paying before the promotion ends. If the introductory rate is above zero, include interest in the calculation.

A promotional rate does not reduce the amount you owe. The minimum payment may be too small to clear the balance before the rate changes; use the actual terms to check your plan.

Purchases and balance transfers are different

A card may promote one rate for purchases and another for balance transfers. Transfer fees and request deadlines can apply even when the promotional APR is 0%.

Mixing purchases with a transferred balance can make interest calculations harder to follow, so read how payments are allocated.
