Amex Adds Airbnb Luxe to Its Existing $600 Lodging Credit

Fine Hotels + Resorts bookings will need two nights to qualify for the credit starting in 2027. A separate Airbnb Experiences benefit also comes with conditions.

American Express has added Airbnb Luxe to its Platinum lodging benefit, giving eligible cardholders another place to use an existing credit rather than another $600 to spend. The change, announced October 22, applies to eligible U.S. Consumer Platinum Card and Business Platinum Card accounts.

The expansion also brings a restriction for hotel travelers. Starting January 1, 2027, Fine Hotels + Resorts bookings will need a minimum two-night stay to qualify for the Lodging Credit. The Hotel Collection and Airbnb Luxe already require two consecutive nights. The new rule concerns eligibility for the credit, not a blanket prohibition on booking a one-night hotel stay. Those changes favor different trips. A traveler looking for a vacation rental gains an option. Someone who uses the credit for a single-night hotel stop will face a longer-stay requirement. The headline dollar amount alone does not show either consequence.

A new option, not a new allowance

The former Hotel Credit is now called the Lodging Credit. Its maximum remains up to $600 per calendar year, split into up to $300 for January through June and $300 for July through December per eligible Card Account.

That limit is shared across eligible bookings and cards on the account. Choosing a rental instead of a hotel does not open another allowance. For example, an account that has already received its full $300 credit for the July–December period does not get another $300 because Airbnb Luxe has joined the program.

The rental must be an eligible Airbnb Luxe property, prepaid through AmexTravel.com or the Amex Travel App with an eligible card, for at least two consecutive nights. An ordinary Airbnb listing does not qualify for this credit. Neither does a Luxe reservation made outside the required booking channel. Official booking requirements

That distinction matters because Amex Travel now offers Airbnb bookings more broadly. Eligible Platinum members can earn 5X Membership Rewards points on prepaid Airbnb bookings through the service, but the lodging credit is limited to Luxe. A listing’s availability in Amex Travel, or its eligibility to earn points, is not evidence that it qualifies for the statement credit. American Express’s Airbnb benefit page

The cost of adding a night

For Fine Hotels + Resorts, the 2027 change is more consequential than a new label. A traveler who needs only one night cannot treat the credit as an offset to that stay under the announced two-night requirement.

Adding a night changes the purchase being compared. The relevant question becomes whether the complete two-night booking, after any available credit, is preferable to the one-night trip the traveler actually needs. The unused portion of a credit is not a reason, by itself, to buy another night.

This is also why a full annual figure can mislead during a single booking. The amount available in either half of the year is at most $300, and it may be lower if the account has already used part of that period’s allowance. A higher-priced stay does not increase the cap.

The expansion may fit someone already planning a qualifying rental or a longer hotel visit. It does not establish that either will be cheaper than another suitable booking. That comparison requires actual prices and cancellation terms, not just the advertised credit.

Compare the trip and full booking charge, check eligibility and cancellation terms, then subtract only credits the booking can earn.

The $250 Experiences credit is conditional

A separate Airbnb Experiences benefit adds another set of conditions. After a qualifying prepaid Airbnb Luxe booking is confirmed, eligible Platinum members can receive up to $250 in statement credits per eligible Card Account per calendar year for eligible Experiences purchased directly from Airbnb during the remainder of that year.

The Experiences must be charged to the eligible Card Account. The limit is not $250 per guest or per Luxe reservation, and the benefit is not available simply because someone holds an eligible card. The qualifying booking comes first. Experiences that redirect customers to a third-party platform for payment are excluded. Official benefit terms

The calendar matters. A qualifying booking confirmed late in December leaves little of that year for eligible Experiences purchases. It does not turn the credit into a fresh 12-month spending window. That makes the purchase sequence important: a planned activity and a planned rental are not enough unless the qualifying requirements line up.

Cancellation can affect more than the accommodation. At least one qualifying Luxe booking must remain uncancelled to keep the Experiences benefit unlocked. If none remains, the benefit relocks and previously issued credits may be reversed. A traveler should not count an Experiences credit as secure while planning to cancel the booking that made it available.

Paying now and traveling later

The lodging credit operates on the processing of an eligible prepaid transaction, not simply on when the trip takes place. American Express says transactions must process by June 30 or December 31 at 11:59 p.m. Central Time for the corresponding half-year benefit period. Travel does not have to be completed by that deadline.

That gives advance bookings a role, but creates a year-end timing risk. A purchase made on December 31 that the merchant processes as a January 1 transaction may draw on the next period’s credit instead. Clicking to book before midnight is not a guarantee of using the ending period’s allowance. Processing and statement-credit terms

Prepayment also means paying the booking in full, rather than a deposit or a bill at checkout. American Express allows up to 90 days for the lodging statement credit to appear. The upfront charge and the later credit are separate events, which matters when assessing the cash needed to make a reservation.

For the new Airbnb option, the host’s cancellation policy still matters, and Airbnb handles reservation changes and cancellations. The rental now sits inside a credit-card booking benefit, but that does not make its refund terms interchangeable with a hotel’s. A useful comparison starts with the trip, the total charge and the cancellation exposure, then subtracts only the credits that the booking can actually earn.
